WILMINGTON, N.C. — A man who reportedly overdosed behind the wheel crashed into three vehicles, including an ambulance with a patient inside.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, Terry Lee Ramsey, 31, apparently suffered a heroin overdose Saturday evening while driving in the 800 block of South Third Street. New Hanover County jail records show the incident happened at 6:58 p.m.
After overdosing, Ramsey reportedly caused a three-vehicle crash in the area. Wilmington police spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron said that among the vehicles struck was a New Hanover Regional Medical Center ambulance transporting a patient.
It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured in the crash, or how severely the ambulance was damaged.
Dandron said that responding officers found several bags of heroin and drug paraphernalia in Ramsey’s vehicle.
Ramsey was charged with DWI, possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving to endanger and driving while license revoked. He was booked into the New Hanover County jail, but has since posted bail.
Records from the N.C. Department of Public Safety show Ramsey has an extensive conviction history in New Hanover and Brunswick counties.
According to records, Ramsey is currently on probation following a January 2018 DWI conviction in Brunswick County. Ramsey has numerous prior felony convictions, including for breaking and entering and larceny in 2015, vehicle breaking and entering in 2015 and conspiracy to commit assault inflicting serious bodily injury in 2014.
