SHAMOKIN — A 14-year-old Shamokin area boy allegedly took a SUV for a drive with three of his juvenile friends early Saturday morning, ran a red light and crashed into an ambulance.
Shamokin Police Cpl. Jarrod Scandle reported that the boy was traveling south in a 2018 Ford Escape on North Shamokin Street and failed to stop at the redlight just before 3 a.m. Saturday. The SUV hit an AREA Services Ambulance that was traveling west on East Sunbury Street (Route 61). The ambulance was not transporting patients.
“I have no idea at this time why they were out at such a late hour,” Scandle said. “That part is still under investigation.”
Scandle plans to interview the parents. The juvenile driver is facing several citations, including driving without a license, failing to stop at a red light and reckless driving.
The driver of the ambulance was EMT Shayla Hendricks, 24, of Shamokin, and the passenger was EMT Shawn Myers, 43, of Shamokin. Both Hendricks and Myers, as well as the four juveniles, were treated for minor injuries and released, Scandle said.
Both vehicles were towed due to severe damage, Scandle said.
Bernie Rumberger, the owner of AREA Services, based out of Shamokin, was unable to be reached Saturday for comment.
