SAN ANGELO, Texas — Three teenagers from Christoval were sent to the hospital, one of them by helicopter, after the SUV they were riding in collided with a tractortrailer rig on U.S. 277.

The crash happened at 11:09 a.m. Monday 12 miles south of San Angelo. All three occupants of the SUV suffered incapacitating injuries, the Texas Department of Transportation reported. The driver of the GMC Envoy was on Venado Drive facing west at the stop sign where the drive intersects with U.S. 277 near Christoval.

The Envoy pulled into the intersection in the path of a northbound International tractor-trailer driven by Justin Maynard, of Menard, which crashed into the driver’s side of the Envoy.

Cheyanne Peterman, 16, of Christoval, who was driving the SUV, was flown to Shannon Medical Center. Front seat passenger Gavino Madrid, 17, of Christoval, was sent to Shannon by San Angelo EMS. Rear passenger Pete Madrid Jr., 16, of Christoval, was sent to San Angelo Community Medical Center by San Angelo EMS.

All three are students at Christoval High School and all three are on athletic teams. Cheyanne played basketball, and the Madrid brothers were on the football team.

None of the three were wearing seat belts, the DPS said.

Spokespeople at Shannon and Community hospitals declined to release information on Cheyanne or the Madrids. Sherianne Briley at Community said the family had requested no information.

“We’re just waiting to hear about the condition of everything,” Christoval Independent School District Superintendent David Walker said from Community hospital Monday night. “Obviously, it’s a very horrific accident. Right now our main goal is to be with the family. We’re in a holding pattern right now. The family, they are in and out talking to doctors and staff.” The main cause of the crash was failure of the Envoy to yield right of way to the tractor-trailer, the DPS said.
