HAMPSTEAD — An Atkinson man and his female passenger suffered potentially life-threatening injuries Tuesday night after police said he was driving drunk when he veered off of Route 111 and struck a tree.

Jeffrey Legendre, 47, of 5 Meeting Rock Drive, faces one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated, a class B felony, following the accident that happened around 11:40 p.m. on Route 111 in the area of Consolidated Plastics - about 1,500 feet west of Route 121.

Police Lt. John Frazier said Legendre was driving a 2010 blue Mazda 3 west on Route 111 when he crossed into the eastbound lane and hit a tree head on.

His passenger, Cheryl Costin, 45, of 9 West Road, Hampstead, suffered what police described as life-threatening injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Legendre was transported by ambulance to Parkland Medical Center in Derry and later flown to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston with possible head injuries. Frazier said his injuries also appeared life threatening.

The conditions of Costin and Legendre were not available from either hospital Wednesday afternoon.

The accident remains under investigation by Hampstead police. The Derry Police Technical Accident Reconstruction Unit also assisted at the scene.
