SEEKONK, Mass. — Sandra Lowery was recently sworn in as Seekonk Fire Department’s first female fire chief.

Lowery had been serving as interim chief since August, the Sun Chronicle reported, and has been a member of the department for nearly 20 years. She also served as a paramedic.

According to NBC 10 WJAR reported, Lowery is just the fifth female fire chief in Massachusetts, and one of only two currently serving.

“I do like to be recognized for my merit not because I’m a female, obviously, but it is something ... it’s a milestone. Never imagined I would be in this position,” Lowery said. “The timing was good, I worked hard and the opportunity was there, I took it every chance I got.”
