LAKE LEELANAU, Mich. — An ambulance crew Friday evening stumbled upon what police say was an unreported drunken-driving crash, leading to the arrest of two men.

Leelanau County sheriff’s deputies say the men were driving separately back from a party when they got into a rear-end crash while turning into a private driveway off of South French Road near Kirt Road.

Investigators said a 36-year-old Interlochen man failed to stop his 1994 black Ford pickup in time when his acquaintance, a 33-year-old Lake Leelanau man, was turning his 2001 Dodge flatbed truck into the drive.

The men then pulled the damaged pickup off the roadway into the drive, according to Leelanau County sheriff’s deputies.

Around 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, a Leland Fire and Rescue ambulance crew was headed back from a call when they came upon vehicle parts and fluids in the roadway, indicating a crash.

The crew then saw the damaged black Ford pickup in the drive and notified Leelanau County sheriff’s deputies to investigate.

Investigators determined both men had been drinking at a party and were under the influence. Sheriff’s deputies arrested both men on suspicion that they were operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

They were lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.
