2 Ohio paramedics seriously hurt while responding to crash scene

CONTINENTAL, Ohio — Two Continental EMS paramedics suffered serious injuries from a rolled-over vehicle while on their way to respond to a minor traffic accident Saturday in Continental.

According to Putnam County Sheriff Brian Siefker, Dwayne Nienberg, 33, the driver, and Janelle Nienberg, 38, a passenger in the vehicle, both of Continental, were in their personal vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, responding to another accident on Road G in Continental when their vehicle left the roadway and rolled onto its top.

According to Erica Blake, Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center director of public relations, as of Monday afternoon Dwayne was in critical condition, and Janelle was in fair condition.

“The passenger was trapped in the vehicle for 50 minutes and had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life by Kalida Heavy Rescue,” Siefker said.

The Nienbergs were transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center on Saturday after their vehicle left the roadway and rolled onto its top in Continental. They both received serious injuries, Siefker said.

According to a press release from Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the office received a call about a rollover accident at 8:59 p.m. Saturday in the area of 6931 Road 21. Emergency services were dispatched to the area. The vehicle was traveling north on Road 21 when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle went off the left side of the road, hit a ditch and rolled onto its top. The driver of the vehicle was ejected, and the front passenger was entrapped. Both the driver and passenger were transported by EMS to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center.

Agencies that responded to the accident included Putnam County EMS, Continental EMS, Continental Fire Department, Kalida Fire Department and Heavy Rescue, Putnam County Sheriffs Office, Continental Police Department and R & O Services.
