NEW YORK — Two workers were hospitalized after a massive cement ceiling collapsed on top of them Thursday morning during construction of the $87 million Orchard Beach Pavilion renovation in the Bronx, authorities said.
The men, who work for Titan Construction, were temporarily trapped under a 20-foot by 15-foot slab of concrete during the refurbishment of the 140,000 square-foot Depression-era bathhouse that was once referred to as the Bronx Riviera, according to FDNY Chief Kenneth Scanlon, who responded to the scene.
Both men, who were wearing helmets when the structure gave way, were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where they were listed in serious but stable condition, according to the chief.
“The safety of our contractors is a top priority for NYCEDC,” Nico Aguilar, the spokeswoman for the agency said. “We are relieved that the workers involved in the incident are in stable condition and wish them a speedy recovery.”
Gilbane, which won the contract for the massive renovation of the pavilion, declined to comment.
The Department of Buildings inspected the site and is awaiting a full report from Gilbane.
