PITTSFIELD — A man’s co-workers rescued him from a trench that collapsed upon him on Tuesday morning, according to the Pittsfield Fire Department.
Edward Shove, 48, of Pittsfield, sustained nine broken ribs after the dirt walls of the trench he was working in caved in just before noon at the corner of Prospect Street and Dewey Avenue. The workers had dug the trench while building a new home.
Shove’s co-workers from All Star Excavation and Factory Direct Modular Homes in Lenox dug him out of the hole by the time Pittsfield firefighters arrived.
Responders treated Shove with oxygen on the scene and sent him to Berkshire Medical Center. None of his broken ribs punctured a lung, and he was treated and released by early Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials.
An investigator with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was at the scene at around 3 p.m. and said he would be filing a report on the incident.
Paul Gardina, owner of All Star, declined to comment.
