ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Four passersby helped free a woman trapped beneath her car after it rolled over her as she tried to push it.

Antonese Williams, 34, of Charlotte, was attempting to turn around on Baldwin Road shortly before noon Wednesday when she was forced to get out and push her Ford Focus, according to trooper T.Z. Bedgood of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

“She was making a three-point turn with her reverse apparently not working,” Bedgood said.

“Traffic began to build so she got out to push her car backward when it rolled forward.”

As the car rolled forward and Williams unable to stop it, she became stuck in the car’s path.

Danielle Ingold, an advertising representative with The Stanly News & Press, said she was driving along N.C. Highway 8 when a man flagged her down for help at Baldwin Road. She and three others rushed to help Williams.

They found Williams lying face up beneath the car.

“All I could see was her face. She was bloody and crying,” Ingold said.

The driver’s side front tire had rolled over Williams’ torso with the Ford coming to a rest after hitting a shrub, Ingold said. By then, Williams was lying closer to the rear wheels than the front.

The four Samaritans that stopped to help all pulled the car’s frame upward, allowing enough clearance for Williams to crawl herself free.

“She pulled herself out,” Ingold said.

“Nobody wanted to pull her because she might have been more seriously hurt.”

Williams’ clothes were blackened from the being beneath the car’s undercarriage and from its heat, Ingold said.

Williams told the group that she did not have time to get medical treatment because as a single mother, she had to pick her child up at school, Ingold said.

EMS arrived on the scene, but Williams again refused treatment, Bedgood said.
