ARLINGTON, Texas — A father carving a pumpkin with his daughter ended a crime spree late Tuesday when he stabbed a carjacking suspect who entered his Arlington home.

The carjacking was reported about 6:45 p.m. at a 7-Eleven in the 4900 block of Little Road. Witnesses said the man was jumping on cars before he stole one.

Shortly afterward the man reportedly stole a tank of gas at an Exxon station on nearby Kelly Elliott Road.

As he fled, the man crashed on the Interstate 20 service road at Park Springs Boulevard. He abandoned the stolen car, ran across the interstate and into a neighborhood.

When he entered a home in the 3700 block of Fort Hunt Drive, he was confronted by the homeowner, Brian Hackney.

“I was personally thinking, ‘What are you doing in my house?’” Hackney said. “I just went into protection mode. Ladies say ‘mama bear’, but it was ‘papa bear’ here.”

Hackney stabbed the suspect with the knife he was using to carve pumpkins, then held him down until officers arrived.

The suspect, whose name has yet to be released, was taken to a hospital for treatment. No one else was injured.
