MOONACHIE, N.J. — A lieutenant with the Moonachie First Aid and Rescue Squad was charged with assault by auto on Monday, two days after he collided head-on with a car driven by a 52-year-old borough woman while responding to an emergency call in his personal car, authorities said.
Franklin Smith Sr., 63, of Moonachie was driving his 2009 Toyota Rav4 north on Moonachie Road near Rooney Place just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday when he crossed the center line and collided with a southbound 2004 Nissan Altima driven by Gaetanina Delduca, investigators said.
Both Smith and Delduca were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with serious injuries. Both remained hospitalized on Monday.
