DALLAS — A fire department teamed up with a hospital to prevent sepsis deaths by better assessing and treating conditions in the field.
KSAT reported that North Richland Hills Fire Department and Medical City North Hills created the Code Sepsis program to train firefighters and paramedics to assess and treat sepsis with antibiotics en route to the hospital.
The new measures helped save the life of Joyce Shore, 78, when responders initiated Code Sepsis after recognizing symptoms of septic shock.
“They were marvelous. They were a miracle that walked in my apartment, they really were, wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them,” Shore said.
“Last year we saved 136 of the patients we had,” Medical City North Hills RN Dorie Murray said. “You can always have mortality with any type of patients, but knowing that you sent 136 people back home with their families is enough reason to keep a program going.”
