LEVITTOWN, N.Y. — Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and seriously injured a 14-year-old girl Thursday on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown.

The accident occurred near the corner of Shelter Lane at 3:52 p.m., Nassau County police said. The girl, whose identity has not been released, remained hospitalized Friday with what police called “multiple trauma injuries.”

Her condition was not immediately known.

Police said the girl was struck by an eastbound brown or tan four-door auto, which then fled the scene without stopping. Police said the victim, after being struck, was “thrown into the air” — and then was hit by two other vehicles.

Those drivers stopped and remained at the scene.

After the accident eastbound Hempstead Turnpike was closed for more than four hours between Pond and Shelter lanes, the bulk of that closure during the evening rush hour. The road was reopened at about 8:20 p.m., police said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
