Md. paramedic killed in Baltimore motorcycle crash

Kevin Wells, a critical care transport paramedic and longtime EMS mentor, was killed while riding home after an overnight shift

BALTIMORE — Paramedic Kevin Wells, 40, who served Calvert and Charles counties, was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Baltimore.

Wells was riding a motorcycle northbound near Russell Street shortly before 7 a.m. on July 14 when he collided with a sedan and an SUV, the Maryland Transportation Authority Police told FOX 5 DC reported. He died at the scene.

Wells volunteered with Calvert Advanced Life Support and worked part-time for Charles County EMS. He had served in EMS since age 18 and was commuting home from an overnight shift as a critical care transport paramedic with Maryland Express Care when the crash occurred.

Colleagues told FOX 5 that Wells spent more than two decades in EMS and was known for mentoring countless providers throughout his career.

“We can never fill the hole,” Nancy Nurse said. “The gap he’s left in the universe. For me, my gravity shifted yesterday. I don’t even know how to hold on to life right now because Kevin’s no longer here.”

Dr. Ben Lawner, medical director of University of Maryland ExpressCare, said Wells was known for his cooking and that his colleagues are mourning his sudden loss.

“We’re still in the midst of processing this,” Lawner said. “He was a friend, family, an unusual talent for cooking — I had no idea we could make such meals in our small makeshift kitchen. And I have to say, he just loved pumpkin spice lattes.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
