Woman Carries Out Pact to Stop “Gawkers” at Wreck Scenes

Donna Allison was taking her son to school one morning in September 2011 when she stumbled onto the grisly scene of a two-car wreck on Highway 280 in Mills River. The cars’ four occupants were killed in the collision. Allison called 911.

“A volunteer fireman showed up first and as we directed traffic you could see the people passing by taking photos,” Allison said. “I told him that my belated twin and I had always talked about designing something to help stop the onlookers. He replied that the first responders have needed something like that for years.”

Allison and her twin had always planned to call the invention Gawk Stopper, and on that day in 2011, in the midst of chaos, an idea was born.
