GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Gaston County is tweaking its strategy for dealing with gaps in rescue squad coverage that have plagued its rural areas.
The revised solution will involve working more cooperatively with volunteer-based rescue squads, in an effort to improve overall response times, officials say.
County commissioners in October approved more than $216,000 to shore-up gaps in rescue squad coverage across the region. More than half of the money was designated for boosting reimbursements for service that are given to seven rescue squads, which recently said they need more money to remain financially viable.
