WASHINGTON, D.C. — The D.C. Fire Department is considering a plan to encrypt its radio channels in order to keep the general public and the news media from listening in.
An idea that began to take shape, according to the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, after officials learned radio traffic from the Navy Yard shooting had been streamed live over the internet; a fact that forced officials to take a second look at having open channels.
For as long as the Fire Department has communicated over two-way radios the general public and the news media have been listening in; a crucial source of real time information about whats happening at fire scenes, shootings, accidents and other major incidents in the city;information that is then passed on to the viewer.
