Durham Paramedic Association’s 4th Annual Skills Competition set for April 1st

The Canadian Armed Forces have confirmed it will be sending personnel to compete and judge in the 2006 Paramedic Skills Competition.

The 25th Field Ambulance, which is part of 32 Canadian Brigade Group Canadian Forces will be sending one medic team to compete and two judges to assist organizers with officialing in the 2006 Paramedic Skills Competition.

We also have a verbal confirmation from another Military team in North Bay who we are hoping will join us.

“We are quite proud to have the Canadian Forces Participating this year....on ocasion as civilian Paramedics and public safety officers we are called upon to work alongside the Military....however infrequent. This will give us the opportunity to build bonds and hopefully learn from each other” said Rob Johnstone a Paramedic with Durham EMS and a member of this years organizing committe.

This years National competition welcomes back 1st place teams from Windsor, ON and Alberta alongside several new teams competing this year.

We have attracted some great sponsors this year and are encouraging public spectators.

The Competition will be held at Durham College Whitby Campus April 1, 2006. The Campus is located at 1615 Champlain ave. in Whitby, ON.

The media are invited to set up begining at 0900 with competition beginning at approx. 1030 and going until approx. 1600.

PLEASE NOTE: if the current Ontario College strike continues an alternate location has been booked in Whitby and will be announced on March 17th if need be.

Media are still invited to follow a team through practice to the competition or participate in a “Paramedic Academy” at our simulation center utilizing “SIM MAN” and “SIM BABY” prior to the event.

Paramedics from across the country will gather to showcase their knowledge and skills by competing in simulated emergency situations throughout the day and utilizing the latest in patient simulation technology, such as the “ Sim Man. ” For more information on the this product, visit http://www.laerdal.com/simman/simman.htm.

During this competition, paramedics will compete in multiple scenarios throughout the day. The event will conclude with an awards banquet raising money for the Starlight Foundation, www.starlightcanada.org.

This year we expect our biggest and best event in our four-year history. We are hoping to attract more public spectators, sponsors and teams and are actively pursuing local and national media. Last year, 27 paramedic teams competed. This year, we are hoping for 30 plus in this one day event.

We have also attracted the interest of Canadian Military teams and teams from the U.S. and will have more info on that shortly.
