Growing Boston ambulance service threatens long-time providers

The expansion of Brewster Ambulance Service led to a lawsuit by a company that lost a long-held contract, and claims the bidding process was biased and unfair

BOSTON — Mark Brewster tried lots of jobs — selling motorcycles, developing condos, running party buses — but nothing gave him as much satisfaction as the career he finally chose: ambulance service.

Brewster and his brother, George, launched Brewster Ambulance Service five years ago, and now the Boston company is one of the largest independent ambulance businesses in the state. The company just had the best week in its short life: It began running 911 service in two new municipalities, Brockton and Quincy, on July 1.

The expansion of Brewster Ambulance, however, is roiling an industry that has been dominated in Eastern Massachusetts by a few companies that year after year won local 911 contracts with little competition.
