NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Rural/Metro, along with several other EMS ambulance companies around East Tennessee, have concerns about a regulation that could hurt staffing.
On Aug. 3, 2014, the state of Tennessee made it mandatory for ambulance companies to have an advanced emergency medical technician, or EMT, on board along with a paramedic on 95 percent of its transports. Previously, it required only a basic EMT and paramedic on an ambulance.
Becoming an advanced EMT requires a semester more of classes than for those who become a basic EMT.
