Medics alert police to alleged drunken driver

The paramedics turned on the ambulance’s emergency lights in an effort to get the vehicle off the road before a crash occurred

HINGHAM, Mass. — Firefighters aren’t on duty to help the police stop alleged drunken drivers, but two Hingham firefighters did just that Sunday night.

Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said David Nickerson and Timothy Holmes first alerted police to a swerving Toyota Prius just ahead of their ambulance on Route 53, and then turned on their emergency lights in an effort to get the vehicle off the road before a crash occurred.

The effort worked, and a few minutes before 7 p.m. police charged John B. Murphy, 60, of Centerville for a fourth alleged drunken driving offense, as well as for operating to endanger and marked-lane violations
