MOUNT POCONO, Pa. — An EMT’s ballistic vest saved him from a stabbing injury after a mentally-ill man slashed him across the chest.

Lehigh Valley Live reported that a crew responded to a call about Anthony Agathangelon, who refused to return to the behavioral health facility he was living at.

While trying to convince Agathangelon to return to the facility, one of the EMTs shouted “knife” before Agathangelon slashed an EMT across the chest. The EMT’s shirt was cut through, but the vest protected him.

Agathangelon had a knife in his hand and two more in his pockets when police arrived, according to the report. He said he intended to kill the EMT because they were “were out to get him.”

Agathangelon also believed someone at the facility was stealing his blood.

“There’s certainly a mental health component to this case,” Pocono Mountain Regional Chief Chris Wagner said.

Agathangelon was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and simple assault.
