BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — An EMS agency’s newest ambulance comes equipped with lights that are designed to prevent collisions by getting the attention of distracted drivers.
WECT reported that the new Brunswick County EMS ambulance has lights in the top corners of the back of the ambulance that flash when the vehicle is coming to a stop, making sure the driver behind them is aware in an effort to prevent being rear-ended.
“With the other ambulances, the brake lights are lower. They don’t flash. They don’t distinguish from any of the other lights on the vehicle, especially at night,” EMS Operations Manager Kevin Mulholland said.
According to Mulholland, Brunswick County EMS had four ambulances rear-ended in 2016. He hopes the new lights will keep everyone a little safer.
“I think it’s more of an alert,” Mulholland said. “I don’t think it should distract the driver. It should allow them to pay a little bit more attention to the road and to their surroundings. With the distracted drivers, they don’t see (the old lights) as much, but this really grabs their attention to make sure that they don’t run into it.”
