GOLD COAST, Australia — Two paramedics are being praised after granting a dying patient’s wish for a sweet treat.
According to a Facebook post, Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics Kate Hanafy and Hanna Hoswell picked up Ron McCartney to transport him on his “final journey to the hospital and palliative care.”
McCartney’s wife, Sharon, told the crew that he had not been eating much, so the two paramedics asked him what he wanted to eat if he could have anything.
McCartney replied and said he wanted a caramel sundae, so Hanafy and Hoswell stopped at McDonald’s to grant his wish.
“He was wrapped, he was getting it all over his face, getting it all over his shirt, he had a big smile on his face and his wife was tearing up because she was so pleased to see him eating,” Hanafy told Brisbane Times.
Ron’s daughter, Danielle Smith, commented on the Facebook post and said he had died five days later. She thanked the paramedics for their act of kindness.
“Thank you so very much to Hannah and Kate, Dad enjoyed this so much and was the last thing he was able to eat by himself,” she said. “Mum and I cannot thank QAS enough for all the help and compassion you have all given towards us each time we have had to call you.”
