DETROIT — A Detroit ambulance was attacked Tuesday while medics were responding to a call of a woman in labor.

After two medics picked up the woman, a crowd gathered at the end of the street where the woman lived, blocking the ambulance from exiting, Click On Detroit reported. Someone from the crowd grabbed a rock and threw it through the window.

The window was smashed and one of the medics suffered cuts to his face, but they managed to transport the woman to the hospital.

“Anyone with a public safety uniform right now is kind of under siege,” Detroit EMS Union President Joe Barney said.

In the past several weeks, multiple Detroit medics faced similar situations. One crew had a gun pulled at them; another medic was punched in the face.

Some medics are now asking for body armor or to carry weapons. The EMS union met Tuesday to discuss safety and next week will meet with the fire administration to come up with a solution on how to keep the responders safe.
