WASHINGTON — A nonprofit organization delivered more than 8,000 care packages to first responders in New York City, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pa. on Thursday, ahead of the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that directly impacted all three areas.
Volunteers at Operation Gratitude, which serves first responders and members of the military, spent two days at the D.C. Armory assembling the packages before delivering them to fire and EMS departments in each area, according to WJLA.
Each care package contains items such as snacks, coffee and lip balm, as well as a handwritten note from a volunteer. Volunteers assembled a total of 8,831 care packages and made their first delivery of 200 packages to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Fire Station 301, according to Operation Gratitude. MWAA was one of the first agencies to respond to the Pentagon attack on 9/11.
