ABILENE, Texas — A high school is considering a program that would give its seniors the opportunity to be EMT-certified upon graduation.
KTXS reported that Clyde High School is hoping to partner with an EMS agency to create a program that would make their high school seniors ready for EMS careers as soon as they graduate.
“We are looking to partner with Citizens EMS to provide an emergency medical technician certification program for our seniors,” Curriculum and Special Programs Director Paula Kinslow said.
Citizens EMS Executive Director Kellie Batangan said they are experiencing a shortage in staff.
“We do need paramedics, EMT’s and advanced EMT’s. They’re all in need around this area, especially rural areas,” she said.
Kinslow said the school district plans to send a plan for the program to the State of Texas in the next few weeks.
“We’ve invited Citizens EMS to be a part of our Career Technology Local Advisory Committee,” she said. “Through those conversations and through the things that are happening at the state level with accountability we just really started pursuing, what are these barriers and how can we break those barriers down.”
