NEW YORK — Lawmakers are introducing legislation that would give families of EMTs killed in the line of duty similar honors as their police officer and firefighter counterparts.
NY Post reported that the legislation gained traction after FDNY firefighter William Tolley’s death April 20. Tolley died after falling out of a ladder bucket while battling a fire.
The goal is to give fallen responders posthumous promotions, according to the report.
Tolley was posthumously promoted to Special Operations Command by Commissioner Daniel Nigro. The honor, however, was not available when FDNY EMT Yadira Arroyo was run over and killed by a man who stole her ambulance.
The campaign was spearheaded by former police officer and current Sen. Marty Golden (R-Queens) and Assemblyman Peter Abbate.
