OBERLIN, Ohio — A man who stole an ambulance said he was “running for his life,” according to officials.

The Chronicle reported that Michael Zunk allegedly stole an ambulance from an emergency room and led police on a chase that reached more than 30 mph.

Police said they tried to use stop sticks, but Zunk avoided them, and when he was finally pulled over, he said he was trying to escape an assassination attempt.

Zunk allegedly told police he heard there was “a hit out on him” while he was with his girlfriend at the emergency room and took off in the ambulance that was unlocked with the engine running.

“I guess when you run that risk leaving your keys in the vehicle when the vehicle is running,” McCloskey said. “It does make it convenient for someone looking for the opportunity to steal a vehicle.” Oberlin Police Department Lt. Michael McCloskey said.

Zunk was arrested and charged with failure to comply with police and possession of a stolen vehicle.
