A recent classification change will allow Chelmsford fire personnel to administer basic life support services during emergency calls, regardless of when they reach a scene, according to Fire Chief John Parow.
Previously, firefighters could only provide hands on medical care to victims if they responded to a call before an emergency medical service team did.
But since the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services classified one of the department’s vehicles as a “Class 5" ambulance earlier this month, firefighters are now able to provide care and transportation as needed, in a manner similar to an EMS crew. ...
