Judge awards $1.2 million to family of biker killed in ambulance collision

The teen failed to stop at an intersection and ran into the side of the ambulance, which “failed to exercise care to avoid colliding with a person riding a bicycle”

GOLCONDA, Ill. — The family of a teenager who died when he collided with an ambulance while riding his bike was awarded $1.2 million by a southern Illinois jury.

Brett McDaniel, 13, failed to stop at an intersection as a Mercy Regional Emergency Medical Service ambulance was cresting a hill around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2007, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The ambulance did not have lights and sirens activated, and attorneys for McDaniel’s family alleged the emergency vehicle was traveling over the speed limit and “failed to exercise care to avoid colliding with a person riding a bicycle.”
