SELMA, Ala. — Multiple shots were fired at two Selma ambulance workers while they were responding to a suspicious emergency call, WSFA reported.
Care Ambulance area manager Jamie Lee said a driver and a paramedic answered the call on Friday expecting to check a patient’s blood pressure in the 1900 block of St. Phillips Street. Lee said someone fired seven or eight shots at the crew when they arrived on scene. The pair ran to the ambulance and reversed the vehicle. Lee said the patient got up and ran away.
No one was injured. No bullet holes were found in the ambulance. But Lee said the workers are still shaken by the shooting.
“They’re upset. I mean who wouldn’t be if you thought you were getting shot at while helping people,” Lee said.
No arrests have been made in the case. District Attorney Michael Jackson said Selma Police is investigating after getting the “patient’s” name. He believes the shooting was a part of a gang initiation ritual. According to WSFA, authorities conducted a massive drug raid in the same area 11 years ago.
