FILLMORE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police say a head-on crash involving a pickup truck and an ambulance was responsible for shutting down highway traffic Sunday morning.

AMR EMTs Kevin Jongekryg and Tim Hoffman were in the ambulance at the time of the crash, reports WZZM 13 News. They were not transporting any patients at the time.

The accident remains under investigation, but authorities said the driver of the pickup truck crossed the centerline and collided with the ambulance around 4:30 a.m. The crash left Jongekryg trapped inside the cabin of the vehicle and severely injured Hoffman, who was riding in the rear without a seatbelt.

The paramedics and truck driver were taken to the hospital. Jongekryg is now listed as being in fair condition, while Hoffman is in critical condition after sustaining a head injury during the crash.

The driver of the pickup appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. A prosecutor assigned to the case is considering pressing charges against him.
