CETRONIA, Pa. — A Cetronia ambulance was knocked on its side Wednesday afternoon in Whitehall Township when a box truck without a driver drifted down a hill and slammed into the vehicle, which was on the way to an emergency.
Two Cetronia workers suffered minor injuries kicking out a window to leave the damaged ambulance, but a nursing student with them was not hurt in the 12:45 p.m. accident on Range Road near the MacArthur Road Walmart, officials said.
“Our ambulance was responding to a 911 call using Range Road and saw the truck coming, attempted to avoid getting hit by it, but the truck hit the rear wheel of our ambulance causing it to roll onto its side,” Cetronia CEO Larry Wiersch said.
All aboard had seatbelts on, he said.
Police were investigating why the box truck rolled down the road on its own. The truck appeared to have been parked briefly, but then it moved.
The Cetronia crew members were treated and released at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. They were “obviously shook up but OK,” Wiersch said.
The ambulance was damaged badly, he said. It had been in service only two weeks.
