Ambulance employee, friend, take unit on joyride after drinking

They immediately confessed to driving the ambulance around the block, and broke a sideview mirror when returning the vehicle

HOMER GLEN, Ill. — An ambulance company employee and his friend were arrested after allegedly taking a unit for a joyride after drinking at local bars.

Weston Fabian, 21, and Mark Fletcher, 23, were arrested after a mechanic notified the president of Vanderberg Ambulance that a sideview mirror was broken on one of his ambulances, the Chicago Tribune reports.

He watched surveillance video, which showed the two men stealing the ambulance, then returning it to the garage. He recognized Fabian as an employee.

Fabian admitted to police that after watching a Blackhawks game at a bar, he asked Fletcher if he’d like to see an ambulance. They took the vehicle from the Vandenberg garage, drove it around the block, and returned it three minutes later. When backing it into the garage, they struck the building and broke the passenger side mirror.

Fabian and Fletcher were charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle. Because Fabian confessed, the ambulance company president opted to only pursue a misdemeanor charge.
