As 2016 comes to a close, we rounded up the top 10 strangest EMS calls.
From paramedics responding to a ‘Homeless Jesus’ to a man losing his testicles by his wife’s hand, these stories will leave you laughing, shocked and maybe a little bit of both.
1. Man threatens EMTs trying to take wife to hospital
A man in Utah became enraged that his wife was being transported to a hospital against his wishes and threatened to shoot the EMTs, chased the ambulance and then crashed into a police cruiser. After crashing into the cruiser and refusing to cooperate, he was arrested under suspicion of making terroristic threats and evading police.
2. Medics respond to ‘Homeless Jesus’ laying out in the cold
Paramedics in Canada responded to numerous calls reporting a presumably homeless person sleeping on a bench in the snow. The person, turned out to be a Jesus statue sculpted by artist Timothy Schmalz, who has placed similar installments in Dublin and Detroit. In July, North Dakota paramedics received similar 911 calls of another Jesus statue installed by Schmalz.
3. Squirrel attacks, injures 3 at Fla. senior center
A squirrel managed to find its way into a senior center, where it attacked three people. A 911 caller told dispatchers the squirrel was jumping on people, biting them and scratching them. The squirrel was eventually tossed outside; it remains unclear if it was later captured.
4. Woman rips husband’s testicles after failing to appreciate her
A woman ripped her husband’s scrotum open after he failed to get her flowers or help her with housework on International Women’s Day. The man’s wife said the incident occurred after he came home drunk the night before and forced her to keep a fire going all night because he was cold.
5. Ore. man impaled by antler of dead elk
A hunter was dragging a dead elk back to camp with his ATV when it rolled backwards, causing him to fall on the animal’s antlers. The man’s hunting party applied bandages and pressure to control the bleeding until rescuers arrived to the scene.
6. Rugby player’s penis ‘almost torn off in tackle’
A rugby player had a close call when his penis was almost torn off after a tackle. The rugger, Haydn Peacock, 23, said he knew something was wrong, but continued to play. He received 11 stitches in his penis.
7. Paramedics respond to woman with shark attached to arm
A Florida woman was at the beach when a small nurse shark attached itself to her arm. Paramedics transported her to the hospital with the shark still attached to her.
8. Boy, 13, hit by stray bullet while lying in bed
A 13-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was hit in the shoulder by a stray bullet while lying in bed. The shooting occurred near a community college campus, which was placed on lockdown until the scene was cleared.
9. Fla. man loses leg after shooting lawn mower filled with explosives
Paramedics airlifted a man to the hospital after he lost his leg when he shot his Tannerite-filled lawn mower. The man survived the incident, although it remains unclear why he shot a lawn mower or filled it with explosives.
10. Authorities searching for clues after Ohio medics find heart in plastic bag
North Central EMS personnel discovered the heart Aug. 25 in a field by a convenience store building. Law enforcement officials said they were unaware of any unsolved cases involving a dead body from which the heart was removed.
