BEIRUT — Severe heat and an unseasonal sandstorm swept across the Middle East on Tuesday, causing at least five deaths and sending hundreds of people to the hospital with breathing difficulties.

In Syria three people died and 3,500 were having breathing difficulties, the Associated Press reported.

In Lebanon, two women died and 750 suffered respiratory problems.

In Israel, more than 450 people were given medical treatment, including more than 270 suffering from shortness of breath and asthma attacks. Over 50 people fainted and more than 120 people who were suffering from heart disease saw a deterioration of their condition.

Emergency services saw a significant increase in calls, with the number of people suffering from shortness of breath and asthma doubled compared to a standard summer day.

Officials advised people, especially those with health issues, to stay indoors with closed windows.
