FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man is in custody after stealing a police officer’s patrol car, throwing the officer from the vehicle and striking an EMS provider Sunday morning.
WRAL.com reported that police and EMS responded to a medical call for a man that was described as “agitated.” While on scene, the man got into the driver’s seat of an officer’s patrol car. Fayetteville Police Department officers tried to remove the man, but a “struggle ensued,” according to the report.
The man put the patrol car in drive and dragged one officer from the vehicle. The officer was then thrown from the car, and the man later struck an EMS provider with the vehicle. Officers from the department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol helped with the police chase after the man fled the scene.
The man, who crashed into several other cars while fleeing from police, is now in custody. The police officer was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. An update on the EMS provider’s condition was not given.
