Ambulance struck by sleeping driver

Two Va. EMS providers and the car driver, who faces charges, were injured

CANA, Va. — An ambulance overturned Tuesday night after a driver fell asleep and crashed into the ambulance, which was not transporting a patient.

Cody Sapp, 23, fell asleep behind the wheel while driving a Toyota car. He then overcorrected after going off the road, crossed the centerline and hit the ambulance, which was going the opposite direction, WXII reported.

The two EMS providers inside the ambulance were taken to the hospital, while Sapp was flown to another medical center. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.

The ambulance was returning to its station at the time of the crash.

Sapp faces charges of reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
