CUMBERLAND, Md. — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 68 west of the Johnson Street exit just before 6 a.m. caused several serious injuries and involved several vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, according to the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services.

Seven people were taken to UPMC Western Maryland by ambulances that responded to the crash upon alert by county’s 911 emergency center at 5:48 a.m.

Cumberland police and fire units, off-duty city firefighters, and volunteer fire companies from Bedford Road, Ridgeley and Bowling Green were dispatched either to the scene or to the Cumberland Fire Department central station.

Two fire calls in the city, including a clothes dryer fire at an apartment complex on Baltimore Avenue, were handled by the volunteer units.

“It all happened about the same time,” said Roger Bennett, DES deputy director.

Just before 8 a.m., Cumberland Police accident reconstruction specialists remained at the scene and Maryland State Highway Administration personnel were directing traffic off at Vocke Road in LaVale during the investigation.

The Allegany County Fire Police also assisted with traffic control.

All lanes of the interstate were reopened about 9 a.m.

Bennett said the crash involved a vehicle that was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.
