VERNON HILLS, Ill. — Six people were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a rollover crash near Hawthorn Mall Monday afternoon, according to Vernon Hills police.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., a 70-year-old man was driving an SUV southbound on Milwaukee Avenue when he drove through a stoplight at the mall entrance right before Townline Road, according to Vernon Hills Sgt. Ward Feger.

Another car, which was driven by a 39-year-old woman and carrying three teenagers and one child, was in the left turn lane of northbound Milwaukee Avenue and was given a green arrow to enter Hawthorn Mall’s parking lot, Feger said.

The man’s SUV hit the car’s passenger side as it was mid-turn and caused the car to roll a full 360 degrees, Feger said.

None of the car’s five passengers were seriously hurt, Feger said, but they were all transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He said the 70-year-old man, who was later given a ticket for disobeying a traffic control device, also was taken to the hospital.

One person from the car did need to be extricated, according to a statement issued by the Countryside Fire Protection District. Other agencies were called for for help and a total of five ambulances arrived on scene.

Paramedics say all six people were wearing seat belts, and noted the outcome could have been much different had they not been.

The intersection was shut down for about an hour while crews investigated and cleaned up the crash.
