KINGMAN, Ariz. — Authorities say five children riding in a Chevrolet Suburban were killed when the SUV crashed in a rural area of far northwest Arizona near the Utah border.

Mohave County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene Wednesday afternoon about 17 miles south of Centennial Park, known as the Arizona Strip. A sheriff’s office spokeswoman says one of the juveniles was flown to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah.

The crash might have happened sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. It remains under investigation and the sheriff’s office says alcohol may be a factor. Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Patricia Carter says autopsies on the five are planned for Monday.

Authorities have not released any names.
