OTTAWA, Canada — An EMS agency is being recognized for forming the first board-certified tactical paramedic team in Canada.

Ottawa Citizen reported that the Ottawa Paramedic Service’s team was certified by the International Board of Specialty Certification through exams that covered advanced cardiac life support, international and pre-hospital trauma life support, tactical combat and emergency casualty care.

“The certification process is focused on the knowledge level of accomplished tactical paramedics that work in hostile and austere environments,” the agency said in a press release.

The unit, which consists of two dozen members, work with first responders on their training deployments, as well as HAZMAT incidents, high-risk operations and active threats.

“Congratulations to our tactical paramedics who became the first team in Canada to be certified by the International Board of Specialty Certification,” the agency said in a Facebook post. “They had to go through a rigorous evaluation process and were tested against the best practices in tactical medicine.”
