HOUSTON — A woman was trapped in a smoking car Monday morning after she was in a crash at Seventh Street and Bryant Boulevard, at the Houston Harte Expressway underpass.

At about 9:30 a.m. a couple driving south on Bryant in a black Suburban collided with a white Ford Taurus station wagon that was traveling north and making a left turn onto Sixth.

The Suburban pinned the Taurus against a streetlight post.

The driver of the Taurus - Clara Diaz, 50, of Houston - was trapped inside the smoking car.

Fire and rescue workers spent about 10 minutes freeing her. Firefighters doused the engine. Diaz was taken away by ambulance.

Carolyn Harriss, who was a passenger in the Suburban, said Diaz “pulled right in front of us.”

Harriss said she was “shook up” but didn’t plan to go to the hospital.

Police said they did not know who was at fault, and no citations have been issued.
