Fla. fisherman rescues man from sinking car

Local restaurateur drove his car off road, crashed into water near bridge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A local fisherman saved a Fla. man from his sunken BMW Wednesday.

A local restaurateur drove his car off the road and crashed into the water near a bridge, according to WTSP.

“It kind of splashed out there,” said local fisher Kevin Daly, “but when I tied it off it actually came right here and sunk right here.”

Daly said a friend in the boat in front of his told him a wrecked car was in danger of sinking into deeper water — and someone was inside.

“He said, ‘there’s a guy in that car!’” Daly told WTSP. “So I was closer. I zipped over here and I just got out and I was banging on the windows and I could see him inside, breathing, but he was unconscious.”

Daly and another Good Samaritan jumped into the water to pull 63-year-old restaurateur Demetri Provias out of the car.

Provias apparently suffered a diabetic shock, causing him to lose control of the car. He was taken to Palms of Pasadena Hospital and said he’s feeling fine now.

“It’s an everyday thing, you know,” Daly said. “Everybody should help everybody when they can.”
