HONOLULU — The U.S. Coast Guard says seven people have been rescued after their ship issued a distress signal in the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii.

Petty Officer 3rd class Anthony L. Soto said Thursday a nearby ship - the Forestal Diamante - rescued all seven people who had been onboard the Golden Eagle some 300 miles northwest of Johnston Atoll. The people were found floating in a life raft.

It’s unclear what caused the emergency, but authorities say the Golden Eagle is now listing on its side.

The ship began sending distress signals from a radio beacon at 4 a.m.

The Coast Guard didn’t immediately know where the Golden Eagle was from or where it was going.
