SAN DIEGO — Paramedics aided lifeguards in treating dozens of people stung by stingrays at San Diego County beaches Wednesday.
Three people were taken to the hospital for further treatment.
The attacks happened at La Jolla Shores and Blacks Beach, with lifeguards saying at one point 12 people had to be treated at the same time.
Paramedics were called in to assist with triage because of the number of victims, NBC San Diego reported. The number of people stung had risen to 55 by the end of the day.
Most of the victims were treated by immersing the stung spot in hot water, the report said, and vital signs were also monitored by medics.
“We’ve really had a large amount of folks affected today, so I would say it’s not normal,” Lifeguard Sgt. John Sandmeyer was quoted as saying.
