UNION CO., N.C. — An out of control school bus flipped over in a ditch Saturday night, sending more than a dozen people to the hospital. It happened in the 4100 block of Weddington Road in Monroe.
Troopers say the school bus driver lost control, and the bus skidded more than 100 feet before flipping over. There were a dozen high school students on board, plus two teachers.
Phil Manto is a retired firefighter, and a trained EMT. He was visiting a family friend nearby when he heard the crash, and rushed over the help. He helped put four students into ambulances. “It was just a chaotic mess, because there were people strewn about, down in the ditch. And some of the people were on the road,” Manto said.
