SOFIA, Bulgaria — A truck collided with a bus in northeastern Bulgaria Thursday, sending both vehicles plunging from a bridge into a river and killing at least 19 people, police and doctors said.
“There are victims and injured people, but we are still unable to say how many were killed,” police spokeswoman Keri Boyadzhiyska said.
The bodies of 19 people have been pulled out of the river, said Dr. Ognyan Alexiev of the National Medical Emergency Center.
The crash occurred in the town of Byala, some 320 kilometers (200 miles) northeast of the capital, Sofia. Both the bus and the truck fell from a bridge into the Yantra River.
“It was a town bus and we have no means to check how many people were traveling on it,” Boyadzhiyska said.
Rescue work has been hampered by thick fog in the area, police said.
